Different countries have different cultures

In china, if a friend invites you to a restaurant for dinner, the friend will pay the bill.

You may pay the friend back by inviting the friend to a restaurant some other time.

But be careful in the U.S.

A friend inviting you to a restaurant does not mean that he or she will pay for the meal.

You are supposed to pay your own share of the bill, unless the person who invited you told you in advance that you would not be paying.

This common practice of sharing the cost is called “going Dutch” or “splitting the bill.”

Whether you like “going Dutch” or not, just remember different countries have different cultures.

If you don’t figure this out, you might be shocked, or your feelings might be hurt.

For business meals, both in the U.S. and China, the person who made the invitation will usually pay the bill.

People often discuss business while eating, because time is valuable.

While eating, Chinese people tend to be casual and relaxed.

They enjoy food by eating noisily and drinking soup directly from a bowl.

They talk and laugh at a dinner table.

Life is too short not to be relaxed at a dinner table.

Americans are considered to be informal, yet they have many table manners.

If you are eating whit Americans, remember not to lift your bowl to drink the soup.

Use your soupspoon instead.

Try to eat quietly.

Avoid talking with food in your mouth.

Also, elbows do not belong on the table!

Compliments on tasty food are appreciated everywhere in the world, so be generous in praising the food wherever you eat!
